NOAA Climate Data Record (CDR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)

AVHRR NDVI CDR for September 1, 2013

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Data Records (CDR) provide historical climate information using data from weather satellites. This dataset contains daily Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from surface reflectance data acquired by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sensor. This long-term record spans from 1981 to 2013 and utilizes AVHRR data from six NOAA polar orbiting satellites: NOAA 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, and 18. This NDVI collection provides the global change and resource management communities with vegetation data for historical trend analysis and vegetation monitoring studies for land surfaces around the globe.

NOAA CDR Products

EarthExplorer offers daily records of NOAA CDR NDVI data on a 0.05 degree by 0.05 degree global grid. Two file formats are available for download:

  • Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) is a file format for storing layers of scientific data (or multidimensional scientific data). The NetCDF download option includes one file with NDVI, quality assurance, and date of acquisition layers within the file.
  • Georeferenced Tagged Image File Format (GeoTIFF) is a standard image format with embedded geographic information for GIS applications. The GeoTIFF download option includes three separate bands (files) for NDVI, quality assurance, and date of acquisition, plus a text file containing the header information from the NetCDF file.
