Landsat Level-2 Surface Temperature (ST) Science Product

Landsat Surface Temperature (ST) image of area
Northeast of Yuma, AZ derived from Landsat 7 ARD
 Tile H005V013, August 16, 2000.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) offers Landsat Level- 2 Surface Temperature (ST) data for Landsat 4-5 Thematic Mapper (TM), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI).  Landsat Surface Temperature contains nine acquisition-based raster data products that represent the temperature of the Earth’s land surface in Kelvin, as well as quality assessment information.

The Landsat Level-2 Surface Temperature (ST) products are included in the U.S. Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) tile-based product bundle. These data are processed to the highest scientific standards and can be used directly in monitoring and accessing landscape changes.

The Surface Temperature (ST) product is generated from U.S. Landsat ARD Top of Atmosphere (TOA) Reflectance and Top of Atmosphere (TOA) Brightness Temperature (BT), Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Emissivity Database (GED) data, and ASTER Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data.

The following date ranges apply to the availability of the Landsat Surface Temperature (ST) sciience product.

  • Landsat 8 OLI: April 2013 to present
  • Landsat 7 ETM+: July 1999 to present
  • Landsat 5 TM: March 1984 to May 2012
  • Landsat 4 TM: December 1982 to December 1993

Most Landsat Collection 1 Level-1 scenes are able to be processed to generate a Surface Temperature (ST) product. In addition to the caveats listed on the Landsat ARD page, please note the following:

  • The Surface Temperature (ST) product will occasionally include missing data, particularly over both inland and coastal waters, due to missing data in the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Emissivity Database (GED).
  • The Surface Temperature product is geographically limited within the boundary of the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) grid (see the Surface Temperature (ST) Product Guide), which is the climate data set used in the atmospheric correction algorithm.
